The westbound lanes of U.S. 50 were closed as of about 6:20 p.m. Saturday due to concrete that had fallen from a bridge, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The highway is closed between 12th Street and Malibu Boulevard near Penrose, about five miles east of Cañon City. Traffic is being detoured onto U.S. 115 and back to U.S. 50, a CDOT spokesman said.
It’s not clear when that part of the highway will reopen, because engineers need to inspect the bridge to ensure it’s safe to send cars through the underpass, the spokesman said.
The spokesman wasn’t sure when the bridge was damaged. It probably was caused by an oversized truck, which apparently kept driving after hitting the bridge, he said.
