Royal eating habits – from Queen’s Tupperware meals to Diana’s McDonald’s trips

Darren McGrady, the Royal Family’s former private chef, has revealed a number of interesting secrets about the famous family’s eating habits over the years.

Working for the royals between 1982 and 1993, the chef spoke openly about the eating habits of the Queen, Prince Philip, the Queen Mother, William, Harry and more in an interview with MarieClarie.com.

And some of the revelations are fairly surprising.

1. Once the Queen has finished eating, so is everyone else

Once the Monarch has finished the last of her food, no one in the family is allowed to eat one more bite, according to Stylist.

2. The Queen is a lover of Tupperware

Her Majesty actually likes practicability as much as the rest of us despite being known to eat from solid gold plates, The Independent reports.

McGrady told MarieClarie.com that she would eat fruit "from a plastic yellow Tupperware container" while she stayed at Balmoral.

3. Prince Philip did not enjoy Prince Charles’s organic produce choices, according to the royal chef

Prince Philip reportedly once asked McGrady: “Oh, is this a Harrods hamper?"

McGrady explained: “I said, 'No, your highness, this is a hamper the Prince of Wales brought with him.' He looked puzzled so I opened it up and I said, 'It's all organic.' And he said, 'Oh, bloody organic!' And just shook his head and walked out."

4. Prince Philip adored a BBQ, however

According to McGrady: "Philip would cook out on the grill."

He added: "He'd come down to the kitchens and discuss what food we'd have: 'Do we have any salmon that any of the family have caught?

"'The Queen's been picking strawberries with Princess Margaret, let's have those for dinner.'"

5. The Queen Mother was late for dinner all the time so the family had to lie about the time

McGrady explained that dinner was 8.30pm in Balmoral when the Queen Mother was staying.

The former royal chef said: “They used to tell her that dinner was at 8.15, and she'd be the last one down. They told everyone else 8.30 because they knew she'd be late."

6. Princess Diana absolutely loved McDonald's

McGrady claims that Princess Diana loved taking Harry and William to McDonald’s – and they allegedly loved getting a free toy with a happy meal.

The chef said: "I remember the Princess came into the kitchen one day and said, 'Cancel lunch for the boys I'm taking them out, we're going to McDonald's'."

He went on: "The boys loved McDonald's, and going out to pizza, and having potato skins – sort of the American foods. They were royal princes but had children's palates."
