Queen’s ‘excellent’ words to Philip during William and Kate’s wedding

The Queen made a touching comment to Prince Philip during Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, got hitched during the lavish £25million ceremony at Westminster Abbey in 2011.

The glam event was watched by about 1,900 guests, the Beckhams, Sir Elton John, the late Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and then-Prime Minister David Cameron, while a further 36million viewers watched live on TV around the world.

Straight after the global event, the newlyweds made their way to Buckingham Palace as Her Majesty the Queen stood on the steps, waving and beaming with pride, the Express reports.

Then, she turned to the Duke of Edinburgh, who died at the age of 99 on April 9, and reportedly said with a sigh: “Well, that was excellent, wasn’t it?”

Although once forbidden, divorce is something that has happened regularly in the Royal Family over the last few decades.

The Queen’s own sister, Princess Margaret, divorced Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1978.

And three out of the monarch's four children are all divorced as well with two remarrying.

William and Kate's happiness, therefore, manifested itself as a heartbreaking nod to previous unhappiness within the Firm.

On the other hand, Her Majesty and Prince Philip's blissful marriage went from strength to strength over the last 72 years.

The Queen once described Philip as her “constant strength and guide”.

However, this does not mean their marriage has not seen a lot of rows.

Royal correspondent James Whitaker wrote in 2007: “The Queen and Philip still have blazing rows.

“One courtier said: ‘You can hardly believe what you are seeing.

“‘There are cries of 'rubbish' and 'you don't know what you're talking about'.'"

Mr Whitaker also added it was not unknown for the Queen to tell Philip to “shut up”.

According to royal correspondents Camilla Tominey and Hugo Vickers, their arguments are actually what has kept them together all these years.

In 2014 documentary The Majestic Life of Queen Elizabeth II, Mr Vickers said: "The thing with the Queen and Prince Philip is that they both are very, very well matched.

“She took on somebody her own size.

“He is the one person who can categorically tell her if something is not going well.

“He can talk to her directly and he does.”

Ms Tominey added: “I think the Queen herself would be the first one to admit that Prince Philip isn’t somebody who minces his words, who has an opinion on everything and doesn’t mind expressing it.

“For the Queen herself, when you consider she is surrounded by a lot of yes men, actually having a man in her life who tells her what he thinks of what she’s doing is probably a refreshing change.

“He does wear the trousers behind palace doors and he is the head of the family and he has made a lot of changes in Buckingham Palace that have been for the better.”
