Mr Michel, President of the European Council spelt out his grandiose vision during a bullish speech in Berlin in which he also drew comparisons with the reuniting of West and East Germany in 1991. The former Prime Minister of Belgium, also touted the possibility of a European army, insisting such a move was in the bloc’s interests.

However, his remarks – which he shared via Twitter – prompted some scathing responses, including one person who simply observed: “Nobody cares what you have to say.”

Speaking in English, Mr Michel told the 12th State of Europe event: “I believe Europe is destined to become the great power of peace for this 21st century.

“A positive, unifying power. We can fulfil this destiny.

“Unity and strength along with our strategic autonomy are the keys to the future of Europe.

“Where else knows better than Germany that unity – unification – makes you stronger?”

Mr Michel also touched on the possibility of the EU beefing up its defences.

He added: “Today more than a European army, we need to improve our capabilities.

“One thing is certain: we will one day have to face a major cyber crisis or cyber attack and the only question is when.

“And recent attacks have shown that the attacks are global and so are the attackers.

“It’s therefore in our interest to pool our efforts and create defensive and deterrent cyber-capabilities.”

Mr Michel’s remarks prompted plenty of sceptical responses on social media.

One Twitter user, calling himself Alexis de T commented: “You do not represent Europe, you represent a bureaucratic organization that’s called the EU.

“The biggest threat to peace are politicians. Soldiers don’t go to war, they are sent.”

Dude. No one cares what you have to say

Sharing a picture of Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Lily Ray posted: “The great power of “peace?” What a ridiculous statement.

“As long you are you in power and as long as you are buddies with these ones, there is a great danger for Europe and Europeans and the Region.”

Another poster, calling themselves Citoyenlibre, said: “74 people watching live.

“Dude. No one cares what you have to say.”

However, not everybody disagreed with Mr Michel.

Ray Gibbs said: “So very true – that is the path history is now set to follow beyond any doubt.

“Sentiments I totally agree with as a historian myself.

“It is the better way forward for the world.”
