A sick NHS worker who raped a sleeping woman after a night spent taking cocaine and alcohol has been jailed for four and a half years.
Dad-of-two Tariq Assayed, 32, was told at a trial at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday that he took advantage of the woman for his own "sexual gratification" while she was asleep and in no position to consent to what was happening..
The pair had been drinking and taking cocaine together in the night leading up to the incident in 2019, and the court heard how he was planning on attending work in the morning while still likely under the influence, reports WalesOnline.
As she slept next to him in the hours after, he removed her trousers and raped and sexually assaulted her.
Assayed, who was a senior support and business analyst at NHS Wales, was brought in for questioning by police when the incident was reported to them, but denied the allegation
Marian Lewis, representing Assayed, said due to the nature of the defendant's father's work he had largely grown up abroad – first in Saudi Arabia and then in Kuwait. She said it wasn't until his teenager years that Assayed returned to the UK and he found it "difficult to adjust" to his new life and began "mixing with the wrong crowd".
But the barrister said despite that start he went on complete a Higher National Diploma course and then secured "good, stable employment" with the NHS, which he found "stimulating and challenging".
She said the arrest and conviction had had a "devastating effect" on the defendant and had resulted in him losing his career and his relationship with his partner.
The judge, Recorder IWL Jones, said it was clear from references that people thought a great deal of the man. But he noted that despite having a good job and being the father of two daughters, the defendant had been out taking cocaine and alcohol on the night in question and was planning to go to work the day after.

He also recounted how Assayed had a problem with gambling, and described his behaviour as "extremely irresponsible".
Assayed was sentenced to four and a half years for the rape and two years for the sexual assault to run concurrently. He will serve up to half that period in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. Assayed will be on the sex offenders' register for the rest of his life.
