Harry memoir ‘final straw’ and ‘starting gun’ in new ‘royal civil war’ – expert

Prince Harry's new book "dashes any hope" he and Meghan Markle will end their war with the Royal Family and will be the "final straw for the Queen", a commentator says.

The Duke of Sussex has announced he will release his memoir late next year, promising to tell an "accurate and wholly truthful" account of his "highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned".

News of the ghost-written book reportedly blindsided his family as the 36-year-old royal added: “I’m writing this not as the Prince I was born but as the man I have become."

Writing in news.com.au, columnist Daniela Elser said that comment triggered "a global wave of eye-rolling" at the ex-senior royal who enjoys a lucrative life in California with his wife Meghan Markle.

"But there is a much bigger learning here, to co-opt some California-lite lingo, which is that the announcement of this book equates to the starting gun being fired on a new and brutal chapter in the Sussex vs palace civil war," added the royal pundit.

She argued the Sussexes' public criticisms of the Royal Family were not "one-off" embarrassments such as when Princess Diana's Panorama interview after Prince Charles admitted to committing adultery on TV.

The Sussexes' decision not to stop at their bombshell Oprah interview – where they accused the Royal Family of racism and neglect – showed they will not "toast their success with a green juice and then get stuck into making the earnestly dull content they have committed to for their corporate lords and masters, Netflix and Spotify," she claimed.

Arguing that his tell-all book will be the "final straw for the Queen", she wrote: "Today’s book news dashes any hope that this might come to pass and only confirms that all of their ‘truth-telling’ verbiage of the last few months is only a taste of what lies ahead.

"What we can now see clearly is that speaking to Oprah was the opening salvo in what is shaping up to be a drawn-out battle between the royal house and the Sussexes."

Elser suggested that the Royal Family could hit back – claiming it had helped Robert Lacey write his book Battle of Brothers.

The book shared claims that Prince William “threw Harry out” after finding out about bullying allegations made about Meghan, which she denies.

"It is impossible to imagine how all of this information would have come out if royal insiders had not acquiesced to (or even wanted) such damaging revelations about Harry and Meghan entering the news bloodstream," Elser said.
