MEPs and staff were informed of the devastating news this afternoon via an email message from the institute’s director-general. The memo, seen by Express.co.uk, said: “It is with deep regret that we inform you that a first EP colleague has died of COVID-19. “He worked as a contractor in DG ITEC. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.”
The victim’s colleagues, in the EU Parliament’s technological support department, have been offered “psychological support”, it added.
The EU Parliament’s some 7,500 staff had been ordered to work from home after the institution was put into lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus.
In the email message, staff were urged to continue “supporting each other in these difficult times”.
“As the epidemic progresses, more and more of our colleagues are confronted with COVID-19 cases among family member and friends, at their place of work or in their home countries, and some have fallen ill themselves,” it said.
“We emphasise very much with all those affected and want to show our support to all. It is heart-warming to see the solidarity between people, supporting each other in these difficult times.”
