A father was shot dead after a gun battle with a 17-year-old boy who had entered into his 14-year-old daughter's bedroom through her window.

Dezmon Hamilton, 34, died after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in his home in Zachary, Louisiana, on Sunday morning.

The teen was also shot but is reportedly recovering in hospital, according to reports.

A neighbour saw 17-year-old Nicholas Mcquirter climbing through the window and alerted the young girl's father.

The young teen's mother and grandmother took Mcquirter downstairs to speak to him about why he was there – but tensions rose between him and the girl's father, the Advocate reports.

It is alleged that the pair began to shoot at each other shortly after at around 8am. The father of four was declared dead at the scene, Fox News reports.

Police initially believed Mcquirter had broken into the girl's bedroom, but it was later discovered he had been there consensually to see Hamilton's daughter.

Mcquirter used a ladder to enter the second storey window in the hopes to enter the room undetected.

Police said they are planning to arrest the teen when he is released from hospital.

He will be charged with suspicion of second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and possession of a stolen gun.

Zachary Police Chief David McDavid said: "It starts at home.

"These young kids got to learn respect, how to treat people, and learn how to deal with conflict resolution."

Dezmon was described as a "young entrepreneur" by the police chief.

He owned several businesses in the area and also worked at a nearby oil refinery, according to his obituary.

Carl Gipson, a local graphic designer, wrote on Twitter that he’d done business with Hamilton.

"One of the clients of our design business, Dezmon Hamilton, was murdered Sunday morning," he said.

"At the last meeting, I just remember the look of excitement he had when he realized it was really going to happen and that he had jumped one of the final hurdles to get it done.

"This is very sad. His mother had come to a few of the meetings and she was so happy for him."
