Calls for Bank Holiday on Monday after England’s Euro 2020 final against Italy

Thousands of people across England are calling for a national holiday the day after the Euro 2020 final.

With the Three Lions into the final stage of a major tournament for the first time in 55 years, millions across the country will be heading to packed out pubs to watch the showdown.

A nerve-wracking game against Denmark saw England progress and they are set to play against Italy on July 11.

Social media exploded with calls to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to let the country have a day off work – no matter what the score is, Lad Bible reports.

One Twitter user said: "England in a major tournament final? Surely this calls for a national holiday."

Whilst a different footie fanatic wrote on Facebook: "Dear Boris Johnson, I am writing to you on behalf of everybody who lives in England, to give us a national holiday on Monday, because football is officially coming home. Yours sincerely, The Entire Nation."

Comedian and presenter Mark Goldbridge joked: “Breaking News! You don't need a petition to make next Monday a national holiday.

"If we beat Italy just take the day off. Because Goldbridge said so.”

Even trade unions are getting involved, and general secretary Frances O'Grady asked employers to be flexible with staff.

She said: "Bosses should talk to their staff and try to let people who want to watch games do so – at work or at home – and then claim back the time afterwards.

"Whether it's about major sporting events like Euro 2020, attending a medical appointment or picking up the kids from school, allowing people more flexibility in how and when they do their work makes them happier.
